CHARLES ALLEN HULBERT
Wooded Landscape.

Oil on canvas. 318x407 mm; 12 1/2x16 inches. Signed in oil, lower right recto. Ex-collection private collection, New York.

Hulbert (1859-1939) was born on Makinac Island, Michigan, to a merchantile family who resettled to Erie, Pennsylvania, in the 1880s. He studied in Philadelphia and New York and was mentored by the landscape artist John Stimson during his tenure as the director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Hulbert painted chiefly bucolic, impressionistic landscapes throughout his career; he worked in Massachusetts, Michigan and New York, ultimately settling with his wife in Brooklyn by around 1920.
