Hankins (1863-1946) was a prominent American painter known for his bucolic landscapes and portraits of Confederate army veterans. After spending a number of years working and teaching in both Richmond, Virginia and Nashville, Tennessee, Hankins moved to Europe in 1910 and later studied under important artists such as William Merritt Chase. The Impressionistic influence of Chase is evident in Hankins later still lifes and landscapes, which are imbued with a dramatic lighting and a mysterious atmospheric quality.
