This untitled oil on canvas is a significant and beautiful example of Charles Alston's mid-century abstraction. With its dashing calligraphic black line and tonal colors, this painting is related to Once Upon a Time in a Garden, 1959, illustrated in the Kenkeleba Gallery's Charles Alston: Artist and Teacher catalogue, from the artist's estate. Its reduced palette also shows Alston's transition to his Black and White series of paintings which also begin in 1959. Jennings p. 51.
