CHARLES HENRY MILLER
The Chicken Coop.

Oil on canvas, 1859. 635x765 mm; 25x30 inches. Signed and dated in oil, lower right recto.

Miller (1842-1922) was born on Long Island, New York. He studied medicine in college, intending a career as a doctor, but he gravitated to art after traveling to Europe in the mid-1860s. An inheritance from his father, a wealthy New York architect and builder, enabled him to pursue art independantly from the 1870s onward. He lived on his family's estate on the far eastern end of Queens, New York (now part of Nassau County) and spent most of his summers in East Marion, New York, on the north fork of Long Island. The majority of his oil paintings depict Long Island subjects.
