CHARLES KIFFER (1902-1992) JANE MARNAC / CASINO DE PARIS. 1928.
62x451/2 inches. H. Chachoin., Paris.
Condition B+: restoration along vertical and horizontal folds.
Kiffer spent his entire career designing posters for the Parisian Music Hall world. For a long time Maurice Chevalier employed him exclusively to design his posters, but Kiffer also created images for Edith Piaf and other performers. This previously unrecorded image is one of his first posters, and the vivid portrait of the star reflects the influence of Charles Gesmar. Jane Marnac was an excellent comedienne and singer, who made her debut at the Casino de Paris in 1923. She regularly appeared at this venue and could also make the transition to theatre (see lot 44). Unlike Mistinguette, who was a populist performer, Marnac was a charming and sophisticated artist.
