Neil Sampson, born on a ranch in Montana, began his artistic career as a painter and caricaturist. His commercial designs and newspaper illustrations led him to San Francisco for an opportunity to create mural art as part of the Works Progress Administration. Serving as art director for the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition on San Francisco's Treasure Island, Sampson was well-positioned to design posters for the occasion as well. After the exposition, he continued his long and varied career as a logo designer and fine artist.
