CULLEN WASHINGTON JR. (1972 - )
Aegina 10 Red.

Collagraph on Hahnemuhle Copperplate Paper, 2019. 572x762 mm; 22½x30 inches. Signed, titled and numbered 19/30 in pencil, lower margin.

Printed by the artist and Master Printmaker Jase Clark at the EPI, Lafayette College, Pennsylvania.

Cullen Washington Jr. executed this collagraph while he was a fellow of the inaugural visual artist in residence at ARCAthens in 2019 in Athens, Greece. Immersed in ancient and contemporary Greek culture, the residency allowed Washington Jr. to ponder Athenian artistic traditions in his abstract visual language. Aegina 10 Red is the outcome of his time spent in Athens and Easton, Pennsylvania, while participating in the ARCAthens/Experimental Printmaking Institute Residency Program.

Cullen Washington Jr. earned his MFA from Tufts University/School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston in 2009 and a BFA from Louisiana State University in 1994. In his work, he utilizes the grid similarly to Jack Whitten and Stanley Whitney but communicates humanity and interconnectedness rather than seperation. He describes his collaged, abstract paintings as non-representational fields of activity.

Washington has been an artist in residence at Amherst College (2016–17), the Fountainhead Residency (2016), The Studio Museum in Harlem (2013); Rush Arts Gallery (2012), Yaddo (2011), and Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2010).

Consigned to support the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation.
