CUNO AMIET (1868-1961)

SONDERAUSSTELLUNG CUNO AMIET. 1920.

50½x35½ inches, 128¼x90¼ cm. J.E. Wolfensberger, Zurich.
Condition A-: small repaired tears at edges; minor creases in margins and image; small pin holes in corners. Paper.

Amiet studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and the Académie Julian in Paris. Influenced by artists such as Gauguin, Cézanne and van Gogh, he embraced the art movement called Divisionism. Emerging out of Post-Impressionism, and adjacent to Pointillism, this aesthetic movement focused on separating colors, rather than pre-mixing them, to instead be interpreted by the viewers' eyes. Upon his return to Switzerland, Amiet and fellow artist Ferdinand Hodler, helped to shape "Jugendstil," and later joined the Expressionist group, Die Brücke.
