Collection of Seventy-nine Cartes-de-Visite, Many Signed by Physicians.
Album compiled by Dr. Cantani, or someone in his household, containing family photographs in the minority, the majority signed photographs of fellow physicians, dating from the 1860s-1880s, some simply signed, others with longer inscriptions addressed to Cantani; including images of a young Cantani, his parents, wife, and children; all gathered in an embossed leather album, worn, each card 4 x 2 1/2 in.; the album 8 x 5 1/2 in.

Cantani was born in Bohemia and studied medicine at the University of Prague, where he graduated in 1860. His father was originally from Naples, Italy, and he immigrated to Italy in 1864 to accept the Chair of Materia Medica and Toxicology at the University of Pavia. He also taught, studied, and practiced in Milan and Naples. He made important contributions to medicine's understanding of cholera, typhoid fever and rabies, but is mainly remembered for recommending the elimination of carbohydrates in the diets of those living with diabetes.
