Castillo, Hernando del (fl. 1510)
Cancionero General que Contiene Muchas Obras de Diversos Autores Antiguos.

Antwerp: En casa de Philippo Nucio, 1573.

Eighth edition, second Antwerp edition, octavo, a compilation of works first printed in Valencia in 1511, which accumulated more material in succeeding publications, peaking in the seventh edition of 1557, of which the present is a reprint; compiling a total of 1,157 separate pieces; text in two columns; bound in full blind- and gilt-tooled tan calf; front board detached; ex libris Edward Shipperdson with armorial bookplate; gilt-tooled blue morocco book label of I. Fernandez; 6 5/8 x 4 in.

We know little about the purported compiler of the Cancionero General, an anthology of Castilian Spanish lyrical poetry from the early Renaissance. In it, the poems are organized by genre and subject. The vernacular poetical contents snowballed over decades of ever-expanding reprints, a testament to its popularity.

Brunet I, 1534; Maggs cat. 495, no. 133; Peeters-Fontainas 176; Salva I, 180; Palau III, 41974.
