Cervantes, Miguel de (1547-1616)
Les Travaux de Persiles et de Sigismonde. Sous les Noms de Periandre & d'Auristele.

Paris: Chez la Veufue M. Guillemot, 1618.

First edition in French, octavo, bound in full contemporary sponge-decorated French calf, gilt tooled spine, with gilt arms of Rochefoucault on both boards, and ownership stamp of Bibliotheque do Chateau de la Roche-Guyon on title page; purchased at auction in Monaco in 1987; 6 1/8 x 3 3/4 in.

Cervantes considered his last novel, the fantastical Los Trabajos de Persiles y Sigismunda, his best, although it stands in stark contrast to the more quotidian Don Quixote. Finished three days before his death, it was first published in Spanish by Juan de la Cuesta in 1617. The Real Academia Española celebrated the 400th anniversary of its publication with a new edition in 2017.

Rius 1006; Palau 53928.
