In 1975 Dawoud Bey began his series Harlem, USA, a personal exploration for the artist originally from Queens. The series spanning four years chronicles communities in Harlem which Bey immersed himself in, as a means of understanding his family history and the historically significant, albeit controversial exhibition Harlem on My Mind (1969) at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
