Following Germany's surrender in 1945, the area around Berchtesgaden and Bad Reichenhall was turned into an Armed Forces Recreation Center, where American servicemen could take time off and enjoy the Alpine scenery and winter sports offered in the region. The U.S. Army ran the historic Predigstuhl hotel until 1953 when it was returned to its original owners. The United States military kept control of the entire region until it was returned to the German government in the 1990s.
