The S.G.T.M. (Société Générale de Transports Maritimes) was founded in 1865 to transport iron ore from mines in Algeria to the port of Marseille. Passenger service began shortly thereafter and a few years later extended to South America, then the West Indies and finally to ports in the Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans.
