The Dominion Line had its roots in a company founded in 1870 called Liverpool & Mississippi Steamship Company, which changed its name to Mississippi & Dominion Steamship Company. Their original goal was to link New Orleans with Liverpool, which was quickly abandoned in favor of a Canadian route. In 1902, the Dominion Line was bought out by a large shipping conglomerate which included the White Star Line. From 1908, the resulting White Star-Dominion Line ran passengers and freight to Canada, and remained in service until 1926, when the name was changed to White Star Line Canadian Service.
