SANDY HOOK (GEORGES TABOUREAU, 1879-1960)

PARIS - LONDRES VIA DIEPPE ET NEWHAVEN / [VERSAILLES]. Circa 1920.

40 3/4x28 1/2 inches, 103 1/2x72 1/4 cm. L. Dufay, Paris.
Condition A-: minor abrasions and restoration in margins and image; top edge slightly trimmed. Framed.

A joint marketing piece promoting travel from Paris to London via train and ship. Travelers would leave Paris' Gare St. Lazare on a train run by France's State Railway (Chemin de fer de l'Etat), travel across the English Channel between Dieppe and Newhaven on a ship run by the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway and then proceed to London in a train run by the same company. Curiously, the poster only promotes the maritime portion of the trip, without any mention of the complete travel time. Depicted is the Versailles which was launched in 1913. In 1923 the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway was merged with several other smaller railway lines and became the Southern Railway.
