Coenraad Van Houten pioneered a process to manufacture cocoa in Amsterdam, Holland, and his company has been producing cocoa powder since 1828. By the end of the 19th century, Van Houten had expanded into the United Kingdom, the United States, France and Germany, with its signature "Dutch process" chocolate. Here, a mother calls out for a cacao break, while others play tennis in the courts behind them.
