DESIGNER UNKNOWN PALAIS D'HIVER. Circa 1900.
80x32 inches, 203x82 cm. Charles Verneau, Paris.
Condition B+: creases and abrasions in margins and image; minor losses and repaired tears at edges and corners; restoration along vertical and horizontal folds. Two sheets.
Located on the rue de Rochechouart, close to Montmartre, this indoor skating rink cannot have been open for very long, as this poster is the only memento of its existence. Not to be confused with the more popular (and far better advertised) Palais de Glace, the Palais d'Hiver, despite its name, was for roller-skating, not ice-skating. The elongated format of this poster (a format that was used quite frequently by Jules Cheret and others) allows the unknown artist to render the charming skater from top to bottom, her boa and her sash twirling with her as she skates. Although unsigned, the poster bears a resemblance to the works of Alfred Choubrac.
