GUSTAVE MARIE (DATES UNKNOWN) TAILLADE / HOP-FROG.
62x21 3/4 inches, 158x55 cm. Chambrelent, Paris.
Condition B+: restoration and overpainting in margins; creases in image. Two sheets.
Marie is primarily regarded as an Art Nouveau illustrator. Amongst the few posters he designed the most famous is a diptych advertising the Parisian poster dealer Sagot. Here the artist promotes a show at the "Eldorado," which is likely a theatre in Montpellier (as opposed to the Parisian café-concert) as Marie is credited with another design for the Montpellier theatre in 1896. This poster appears to be for a theatrical adaptation of a short story by Edgar Allan Poe, although no solid record of this adaptation exists. Depicting a tender and loving moment between Hop Frog and his girlfriend Trippetta, Marie employs a very similar style to Eugene Grasset and Paul Berthon. Previously unreferenced.
