Dorothy Waugh studied design at the Chicago Institute of Art, then moved to New York where she managed Alfred A. Knopf's children's book department. During the 1930s, she worked for the National Park Service as production supervisor as well as providing them with actual artwork and copy. She designed 16 posters for the National and State Parks in the mid-1930s. The entire series is marked by a unique treatment of typography and bold graphics. Her style of simple two- and three-color graphics creates strong visuals that stand out amongst the American designs of the period. "They show Waugh's stylistic range, design clarity and inventive typography" (Resnick p. 48). Posters for the People p. 83.
