First edition, 12mo, 252 pages, illustrated with twelve full-page lithographs and large folding plate; bound in publisher's brown ribbed cloth, large gold stamp of Native American on front board, spine lettered in gilt, endpapers renewed, headcap carefully mended, some spotting, otherwise very good, 7 1/4 x 4 1/2 in.

De Smet was a Belgian Catholic missionary who traveled to the Rocky Mountains in the 1840s, from St. Louis to Fort Vancouver, Washington and back. His text is presented as sixteen letters to his supervising priest.
