EDMOND MARIE PETITJEAN (1844-1925) PARIS VIVANT / JOURNAL HUMORISTIQUE.
58 3/4x42 1/8 inches, 149x108 cm. La Lithographie Nouvelle.
Condition B+: restoration in upper right corner and along vertical and horizontal folds; minor staining in margins and image.
Unlikely though it seems, Petitjean was an artist who was known for his classical landscape paintings. Quite the contrary to his paintings, this is a witty, well designed, distinctive, Cappiello-esque poster, thoroughly suited to the humor magazine it is advertising. Where Petitjean differs from Cappiello is in his use of an intricate background, intricate details on the woman herself, and a very graphic usage of the blank paper to delineate some of the image.
