EUGENE GRASSET (1841-1917) EXPOSITION INTERNATIONALE DE MADRID. 1893.
58 3/4x42 5/8 inches. Lemercier, Paris.
Condition B+: time staining and restored losses along vertical and horizontal folds.
To herald the International Exhibition in Madrid, Grasset has presented an enticing woman on the steps of the Palace of Industry and Arts. The poster is laid out in the manner of Grasset's earlier posters, with a large text box inserted into the image. The central figure is leaning back, as if to reveal both the elegant building behind her and the text. Grasset's decorative style, strongly influenced by the pre-Raphaelites and the middle ages, is on full display here in both the woman's heavily patterned dress, and the dramatic ribbons of clouds that fill the sky. Arwas notes that this image was originally designed to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's discovery of America. This is the French version. Arwas p. 32, DFP-II 407, Reims 673.
