Baldwin (1780-1838) was an important contributor to American civil engineering, but also studied and practiced law, and wrote on political economy. Involved in the planning and design of the Bunker Hill monument, Baldwin also served as engineer on numerous projects including canals, dams, tunnels, dry docks, and railways.
