first american edition. signed by forester on half-title. While the American and English editions were published in the same year, their endings differ. In the English edition, the Royal Navy sinks the Konigin Luise, and Rose and Allnutt survive to marry; in the American edition, they fail to sink the ship with the African Queen''s torpedo, and Allnutt disappears beneath the waves. The film version starring Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn compromised by combining the two endings.
