FRANCIS BERNARD (1900-1979) VISITEZ LE MAROC. Circa 1933.
39x241/2 inches. Paul Martial, Paris.
Condition B+: restoration and overpainting in margins; vertical and horizontal folds; pinholes in margins; minor creases in image.
Francis Bernard was a member of the U.A.M. (Union des Artistes Modernes), as well as A.M. Cassandre, Jean Carlu, Charles Loupot and Paul Colin. Although he is the least known of the five, he was, in fact, the pioneer of photomontage in France and also the first of the group to work as a full-time art director for the printer Paul Martial. This poster advertising boat trips to Morocco shows how he began to insert photography into his bold and powerful graphic designs. He also liberally used airbrushing and bold typography to help create this, one of the rare modernist travel posters of the period. Orientalist p. 31.
