FRANCISQUE POULBOT (1879-1946) LE JOURNAL / ELLES VONT A L'AMOUR. 1910.
63 1/4x47 inches, 161x129 cm. Daude Freres, Paris.
Condition B+ / B: repaired tears, restoration and overpainting in margins, image and along vertical and horizontal folds.
Poulbot was a self-taught artist who became a disciple of Theofile-Alexandre Steinlen. He spent his career in Montmartre and became so famous for his magazine, book and poster depictions of street urchins, that even today they are referred to as petits poulbots. Practically the only time that his "signature" children do not appear in his work is in his posters for Le Journal. Between 1908 and 1916 he designed fifteen posters for this popular newspaper, all of which were advertising serialized novels. Here, for the story "They Seek Out Love," Poulbot divides the image into two, with a gray sky filled with the faces of men looking down on a veritable army of women of all different ages and classes. Poulbot 93.
