FRED TAYLOR (1875-1963)

MIDDELBURG HOLLAND / VIA HARWICH - FLUSHING. Circa 1928.

40x50 inches, 101¾x127 cm. The Dangerfield Printing Co., London.
Condition B+: repaired tears at edges, some into image; extensive creases in margins and image. Framed.

A market scene populated by women in their ethnic finery in the shadow of the impressive gothic Town Hall in Middelburg. "Some of the finest advertising was produced by the LNER . . . in promoting their routes to the Continent. The LNER operated from several ports . . . but its main passenger service was from Harwich to the Hook of Holland, Flushing and Zeebrugge" (Railway p. 23). Taylor designed more than 60 posters between 1908 and the 1940s. His style, often very detailed, is here more representative (in the style of Tom Purvis) using broad, flat areas of color to create implied details.

Furness Vol. 8, p. 72.
