FREDERICK D. JONES (1914 - 2004)
Women in a Surrealist Interior.

Watercolor on wove paper, circa 1950. 406x292 mm; 16x11 1/2 inches. Signed twice in pencil, lower left.

Provenance: private collection, New York.

This surreal watercolor by Fred Jones is a scarce example from his early, Chicago period. An Atlanta native, Jones first studied at Clark College and the Britt School of Art in Atlanta before leaving for Chicago in 1940. As part of the Arts Craft Guild, Jones studied at the Art Institute of Chicago with mentor George Neal and fellow young artists Eldzier Cortor, Charles Sebree and Charles White. Jones became a part of this founding group of artists of the South Side Community Art Center in Bronzeville with its launch in 1940. After his wartime navy service, from 1943-46, Jones became the assistant director of the South Side Community Art Center in 1947.
