As Williams's images were reproduced directly from pencil sketches, this may be the only ink drawing by him for this work. The British born illustrator was able to capture the feel, characters, and country of the Wilder family's Kansas by accompanying Laura Ingalls Wilder on a 6-month trip to research his drawings. Purchased at auction by the current owner from the Estate of Garth Williams .
