GEORGES MEUNIER (1869-1942) BULLIER. 1895.
231/2x16 inches. Chaix, Paris.
Condition A-: pinholes and overpainting in image.
Bullier was a popular dance-hall located in Montparnasse. It was a major destination for Bohemian Paris. Jane Avril started her dancing career there, and many Montparnasse artists such as Guillaume Appolinaire and Pablo Picasso were regulars. Beginning with Jules Cheret, the club drew on the talents of many poster artists to help advertise the multiple events they organized all year long. Meunier depicts his typical beauty in the midst of a wild can-can, being cheered on by an even wilder reveler in the background. Although his style is clearly inspired by Cheret, he treats the subject in a more pertinent manner. Maitres 147, DFP II 580, Reims 853, Gold 142.
