GEORGES MEUNIER (1869-1942) JARDIN DE PARIS / MONTAGNES RUSSES NAUTIQUES. 1895.
481/2x341/2 inches. Chaix, Paris.
Condition A.
Parisians had a love affair with fairground attractions at the end of the 19th century. In 1888 Joseph Oller made a killing with his roller-coaster ride, Montagnes Russes on the Grands Boulevard, but he was forced to close this attraction in 1891 because of security issues. Zidler, who owned the Moulin Rouge and the Jardin de Paris in the summer on the Champs Elysees, imported a similar ride from the United States. This one, however, was a water ride, with the term "Nautical" and "Niagara" both appearing prominently in the poster. Looking at the image we can see that it was quite an elaborate structure in which boats were hoisted up to the top of two metallic towers, and then slid down a slide into a lake. Reims 863, Wine Spectator 27, Gold 128.
