GEORGES MEUNIER (1869-1942) LIQUEUR SEVE DE FINE CHAMPAGNE. 1895.
463/4x341/2 inches. Chaix, Paris.
Condition B+: creases, tears, and minor losses in margins and image; pinholes in corners; vertical and horizontal folds; tape on verso. Brittle paper.
This is one of the very few posters that Meunier designed that does not feature a young, sexy woman. But, given the context of the advertisement, it is understandable. We are shown a "serious" bar, where "serious" men come to drink "seriously" (their foray into the world of sexy young women will no doubt come later in their evening). In the foreground a portly gentleman, a respectable officer of the Legion d'honneur, no less, is explaining to his mustachioed colleague the finer points of the Seve fine Champagne. The drink, from Rochefort, in the cognac region of France, was a liqueur with a cognac base.
