GLOUCESTER COUNTY, VIRGINIA. Manuscript complaint against a slave named Daniel "for provokeying (sic) and insulting language." Single 4to leaf, written on one side; creases where folded. Gloucester, Virginia, 1856

Additional Details

Guilderoy Williams, who signs this document with an "X," makes a formal complaint against a slave named Daniel, the property of one Landon N. Davis. Daniel used "provokeying" language and Mr. Williams wanted him apprehended and held to answer for this affront. Guilderoy had a witness to this, C. B. Robins, who did not, or could not, sign the complaint. The entire complaint was written out by the Justice of the Peace. One has to wonder what Daniel said.
