HALE WOODRUFF (1900 - 1980)
Untitled (Campus in Winter).

Oil on canvas, circa 1931-33. 406x508 mm; 16x20 inches. Signed in oil, lower right.

Provenance: private collection.

This beautiful, atmospheric painting is from the artist's first years as an art professor where he became "a one-man [college] department" at Atlanta University in 1931. Woodruff accepted a position teaching at Spelman College and Morehouse College in Atlanta University after he could no longer afford to live abroad in France. He did a series of linoleum cuts of Atlanta University campus buildings later in 1935. This is the only example of a campus painting that we could locate. His landscapes typically focused on the rural edges of the city. Stoelting p. 17.
