HALE WOODRUFF (1900 - 1980)
Untitled (Georgian Landscape).

Watercolor on wove paper, circa 1939-44. 508x660 mm; 20x26 inches. Signed in watercolor, lower right.

Provenance: Merton Simpson Gallery, New York, NY; private collection, New York (1994).

This vivid study of nature is an excellent example of Hale Woodruff's modern landscapes. Woodruff painted a number of oil and watercolor landscapes of the eroded, wooded rural hills around Atlanta in the 1930s and 40s. Another desolate scene is Southland, circa 1936, located in the collection of the Amistad Research Center, New Orleans. One of Woodruff's best known images, Poor Man's Cotton, watercolor, 1944, collection of the Newark Museum, has similar vivid washes of aquamarine blue.
