HANNA BARBERA / DICK BICKENBACH / FRED FLINSTONE
Yabba Dabba Doo!

Sketch of Fred Flinstone, circa 1970. Mixed media including crayon and ink on paper. 279x216 mm; 11x8½ inches.

Bickenbach was one of the most important character designers and layout artists in the early days of Hanna Barbera studios (as well as the studio's predecessor MGM Studios). He was instrumental in developing the 'Hanna Barbera style,' making major contributions to many classic series, including The Flinstones, The Jetsons, The Huckleberry Hound Show, and Yogi Bear. Bickenbach was also a prolific comic artist on a variety of titles, including The Flinsones newspaper comic strip. Despite the deceptive simplicity of Fred's character design, Bickenbach's knack for appealing imagery and grasp of anatomy shines through in this sketch of Fred.

Provenance: acquired from the artist on a visit to Kings Island theme park circa 1970; To current owner.
