HANNA BARBERA / PAUL JULIAN
Heidi, Grandfather, and Spritz the Goat Animation Cel and Background Setup.

Hand-painted animation cel and background setup for Heidi's Song, 1982. Watercolor on board and acetate. 266x 343 mm; 10½x13½ inches.

Provenance: The background was originally owned by Charles August Nichols, veteran Disney and Hanna Barbera animator and director (best known for directing Charlotte's Web), who was the original director of Heidi's Song, until his replacement by the 'edgier' Robert Taylor.

Condition: Some minor paint loss on Grandfather, and bits of adhesive residue on the background, which does not significantly detract from the image.

An adorable multi-cel setup of Heidi, Grandfather, and Spritz the Goat over an intricate hand painted alpine background by Paul Julian (1914-1995), for the 1982 Hanna Barbera animated feature Heidi's Song.

Additional Details

Paul Julian is widely considered one of the greatest of all animation background artists, with a style marked by a masterful use of color and intricate detail. In addition to his numerous contributions to Hanna Barbera films and series, he painted backgrounds for many classic Warner Bros shorts circa 1940s-50s, and designed and painted much of the landmark Oscar-winning UPA short The Tell-Tale Heart (1953).
