HARRY NADLER
Return to Byzantium VI.

Tempera on rice paper mounted on canvas, 1987. 565x920 mm; 22x36 inches.

Ex-collection private collection of Betty and Douglas Duffy (owners of Bethesda Art Gallery); thence by descent to current owner, private collection, Houston.

Exhibited David Findlay Jr. Fine Art, New York.

Nadler (1930-1990) was raised in East Los Angeles and arrived in New York in 1962 to pursue a career as an artist. His work is primarily abstract and his influences ranged from Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) to Richard Diebenkorn (1922-1933). Nadler exhibited widely throughout the 1960s to 1980s and taught fine art in New York, Connecticut and New Mexico.

In 1987, he received a grant from the Israeli government to spend a month at Mishkenot Sha'nanim (Center for Humanities) in Jerusalem. This tenure led to his creation of several celebrated late career series, including this work from Return to Byzantium as well as the Jerusalem and Sightings series.
