I was an actor-producer. My payroll ran from five to ten thousand dollars per week when not shooting . . . . When I stopped all these people lost their jobs. . . .

In May of 1940, Hart won a $280,000 award in his lawsuit against United Artists who were found to have breached their contract by mismanaging the distribution of the 1925 film Tumbleweeds.
