HENRI VAN DE VELDE (1896-1969) GOOISCHE TENTOONSTELLING. Circa 1930.
25 1/2x20 5/8 inches.
Condition B+: minor tear in left margin; vertical fold. Paper.
Based on the signature one could assume that this poster was designed by the famous Belgian architect who is best known in the poster world for his image for Tropon. But in fact, the Van de Velde responsible for this intriguing poster was an eponymous Dutch painter. Advertising The Tourist Information office in Hilversum, a city southeast of Amsterdam, the poster is a smashing example of early Dutch Art Deco. The vertical, central composition owes a lot to the Dutch Art Nouveau masters, but the rendering of the image itself, with its consolidated geometric look and stylization is completed in a modernist manner. This rare poster depicts Mercury, God of Trade, who is bearing on his shoulders the typographic block announcing the show. At the bottom, a train, ship and plane illustrate the commercial content of the show.
