Luhrs (1897-1964) worked as an illustrator for Cosmopolitan magazine and simultaneously made a career as a portrait and genre scene painter. He was also the founder of the Henry Luhrs Sea Skiff Company (his grandfather had been a boat builder and owned a chandlery in New York during the mid-1800s). By the time Luhrs' sons had joined the boat business, their company had grown to produce over 1200 boats per year; Luhrs ultimately retired and resumed painting again in his later years. The Henry Luhrs Sea Skiff Company was sold during the 1960s, the family reclaimed the Luhrs company name in the 1980s and became among the most popular makers of mid-size fishing boats in the world.
