JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
Annie, Seated.

Etching printed on bluish laid paper, 1858. 129x96 mm; 5 1/8x3 3/4 inches, wide margins. Second state (of 2). A very good impression.

This is one of 3 etched portraits that Whistler made of his niece Annie Harriet Haden during the late 1850s and is probably the best known. The pose is reminiscent of Fumettefrom 1859. ( lot 61)

The bluish laid paper used for this impression was preferred by Whistler's Paris printer, Auguste Delâtre. Early impressions of etchings from the contemporaneous "French Set" published in 1858 and printed by Delâtre are also found on bluish laid paper. Kennedy 30.
