JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
Seymour, Seated.

Etching on cream laid Japan paper, 1859. 136x97 mm; 5 3/8x3 3/4 inches, full margins. Second state (of 2). A superb impression of this scarce print, with inky plate edges.

We have found only 8 other impressions at auction in the past 20 years.

This is a portrait of Whistler's nephew Seymour Haden, the son of his half-sister Deborah and Francis Seymour Haden, at around 7 years old. It is one of 3 etched portraits of Seymour that Whistler made in the late 1850s, which show the boy in the same Scotch dress and argyle socks. Kennedy 29.
