JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
Gaiety Stage Door.

Lithograph on Chine appliqué, 1887-87. 123x195 mm; 4 7/8x7 5/8 inches, full margins. Edition of 100. Printed by Thomas Way, London. Published by Boussod, Valadon & Cie. Paris. From Notes. A very good impression.

Whistler's first lithograph using transfer drawing paper, Old Battersea Bridge, No. 2, 1878-79 (Spink 13), evidently ended in failure, so he economized his technique with this and the proceeding lot, making the drawing more sketch-like and lighter in tone. While there are no impressions known before Whistler's reworking of the stone in 1887 for the Notes portfolio, he made the transfer drawing for the lithograph prior to his 1879 departure for Venice in 1879. Way 10; Levy 21; Spink 14.
