JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
Victoria Club.

Lithograph, 1879-87. 206x134 mm; 8 1/8x5 3/4 inches, wide margins. Second state (of 2). Edition of 100. Printed by Thomas Way, London. Published by Boussod, Valadon & Cie., Paris. From Notes. A fine impression.

Like Gaiety Stage Door (lot 91A), Victoria Club is a view from the lithograph printer Thomas Way's offices on Wellington Street, London. These are also his earliest attempts at lithography via transfer papers, a process that would afford him the directness and ease to produce a group of more than 150 lithographs over the next 18 years.

The flat, frontal view of a building façade is a motif that would reappear often in Whistler's subsequent lithographs and in later etchings as well. Way 11; Levy 22; Spink 15.
