JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
La Marchande de Moutarde.

Etching and drypoint on thin, cream wove paper, 1858. 157x78 mm; 6 1/4x3 1/2 inches, wide margins. Fifth state (of 5). From Twelve Etchings from Nature. A brilliant, richly-inked impression with warm plate tone.

The composition of this etching parallels The Rag Gatherers, both street-level views into an interior occupied by two figures. This was a favorite device of Whistlers, and one which he repeated throughout his oeuvre.

While the title of this etching implies a Parisian subject, the scene is based on a drawing Whistler made in Cologne during his sketching trip to the Rhine in the summer of 1858 and etched after his return to Paris. Kennedy 22.
