JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
The Rag Gatherers.

Etching on cream laid paper, 1857-58. 155x90 mm; 6x3 1/2 inches, wide margins. Fifth state (of 5). A very good, richly-inked impression.

Whistler originally concieved of this etching without the two figures, as a view through a doorway into an empty room in the Latin Quarter of Paris. The figures were added after 1861, purportedly at the suggestion of the barrister and sometime art dealer Sergeant Ralph Thomas. He had bought the etched plates for the "French Set" and had them printed by Delâtre in London for an edition he sold during the 1860s in conjunction with Whistler's early Thames etchings. Kennedy 23.
