JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
Little Maunder's.

Etching printed in dark, brownish black, 1887. 83x52 mm; 3 3/8x2 inches. MacDonald's first state, before cancellation. Trimmed by the artist just outside the plate mark and with the unsigned tab lower left. A superb impression of this extremely scarce etching.

MacDonald lists only 7 other impressions in public collections worldwide.

We have not found another impression at auction in the past 30 years.

This building, in a row of old houses, was the site of Mrs. Elizabeth Maunder's fish-shop located at 72 Cheyne Walk, Chelsea, London. The building was demolished in 1892 and Whistler later lived in the house that replaced it (in turn destroyed in World War II). Whistler also made a lithograph of the façade, Maunder's Fish Shop, Chelsea, 1890 (Way 28). Kennedy 279; Glasgow 273.
