A Detroit native, printmaker James Lee focused on creating art that reflected the community in which he lived. He began his art practice drawing the faces of people he saw in his church. His work was included in the seminal 1971 exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Contemporary Black Artists in America. At the time of his death, Lee served as the vice president of the Michgan Association of Printmakers.
